"It is an incredible privilege to be a scientist.
Good scientists love every bit of what they are doing and are self-driven
by curiosity. There might be other jobs that pay much better, but
they can hardly be so much fun. Traditionally societies honored
and supported our commitment without asking for immediate returns,
a bargain that benefited both sides. I hope we can stem the fashionable
temptation to manage science like it is a business. Creativity cannot
be measured in impact factors and the unknown has no milestones.
If we can maintain a system based on mutual trust, scientists will
continue to have big dreams and the means to pursue them."
